Guns n' Roses' massive debut album, the fierce hard-rocking Appetite For Destruction, tore into the U2 and Prince-dominated charts of 1987. But.... no story of Guns 'N Roses would be complete without mention of the controversies and problems which weave through the fabric of their career.
They first formed in 1985.... when Axl Rose and Tracii Guns pulled together a band with fellow musicians Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar) and Guns' former L.A. Guns bandmates Ole Beich (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums). By 1986, Gunns and Beich had been replaced by Slash (guitars) and Steve Adler (drums) making the classic line-up for their first EP, Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide (1986), and subsequent debut album Appetite For Destruction in 1987.
The band's fame gathered like a storm and they were soon playing major festivals, including the ill-fated Castle Donnington festival in Leicestershire, England at which two fans were trampled to death during their set. This event.... and the increasing visibility of the band's hard living lifestyle earned them the title of.... "The world's most dangerous band!"
G'N'R Lies was released in 1988, reprising the tracks from their first EP and adding four new acoustic tracks, of which "One in a Million" attracted negative press as a result of perceived racist and homophobic overtones. By this time the bad behavior and evident drink and drug abuse of the band was threatening to overshadow their success as musicians.
The recording of dual releases.... Use Your Illusion I and.... Use Your Illusion II was an ambitious plan for any band.... But, was hampered by Steven Adler's increasing cocaine and heroin problems. As a result he was fired from the band during the recording process in.... 1990. With former The Cult member Matt Sorum replacing Adler (together with keyboardist Dizzy Reed who had joined the band shortly before), the albums were released and achieved record-setting success as they achieved debut entries at No.1 and No.2 in the US Billboard chart.
The band's behavior remained controversial during the Use Your Illusion tour, with Rose gaining particular notoriety and raising questions about his mental health. Subsequent concerts were seen to incite riots and attracted increasingly florid headlines. The Spaghetti Incident.... was released in 1993, but failed to attract the same level of success as previous releases. Membership of the band began to fluctuate until, by 1998, Rose was the only original member left, with Slash, McKagan and Sorum having created.... Velvet Revolver, instead.
After years of speculation, rumors and leaks, Axl Rose finally finished the long awaited Chinese Democracy album in 2008.
